The auto-renew function dates back to a time when domains still had to be actively renewed at the registry. At that time, this was to ensure that fun orders were paid for. In the meantime, however, most domain registries, such as DENIC for .de domains, have switched to assuming an auto-renewal.
As a domain provider, we therefore make advance payments to the registry and registration partners and pay for the domains in advance. With this procedure, we want to ensure that domains are not accidentally released or deleted simply because the transfer of the invoice has been missed.
